During Your Program FAQ

An overview of frequently asked questions:

Reducing the number of forum notification emails of courses in Moodle

When you get too many emails from Moodle notifications, it is possible you reduce that number by unsubscribing or changing the way you receive them. See this article on our IT Knowledge Base to help you do that.

Do I have to register for the courses I have selected?

No, once your schedule is built and finalized you’ll automatically be enrolled in all of your courses. The exception to this is the professional focus part of your program. These courses will be organized closer to the end of your program.

I have a course coming up that I no longer wish to take. What should I do?

We understand that things change and you may find you’re going in a different direction. We’re here to help you meet your goals. If you decide to adjust your selection of courses, let us know and we’ll work together to determine a new schedule for you. Please let us know at least nine weeks prior to the course start date so that there is enough time to register you in a new course.

What should I do if I want to withdraw from a course that has already started?

If you decide to withdraw from your course, you must let us know via email. It is important that you state your request very clearly in your email (i.e., “I am requesting to withdraw from my course, XYZ”). The date in which you inform us of your request to withdraw is the date of your withdrawal. Please refer to our Tuition Refund Policy for more information.

I noticed that my program schedule says “Program schedules, including start and end dates, are subject to change.” What can I expect?

Because you’re taking courses from various programs at the university, we’re subject to their changes. Programs at Royal Roads constantly strive to be responsive to student and faculty feedback and suggestions, and as a result, a course may change or be replaced; a residency course may turn into an online course or vice versa, or timing of a course may change. We’ll give you as much notice as possible about how this will impact you and your schedule, and work with you to arrive at an adjusted schedule.

How can I take a course from another institution while enrolled in the BAIS program?

Subject to permission from the BAIS program head and the associate registrar, you can take courses from other institutions while enrolled in the BAIS program and you may have those credits count towards your BAIS program, as long as your BAIS program does not exceed the maximum transfer credits allowed (see the full academic regulation). To take an external course (or courses), you must request to do so by completing a Letter of Permission. A request should be made at least one month before the external course starts. To start this process, please contact our office at CoISAdmin@RoyalRoads.ca.

For more information, please refer to our academic regulation on Letters of Permission.

Follow these requirements when identifying an external course:

    • The course must align with your overall BAIS academic direction.
    • The course must be at either the 300 level or 400 level.
    • The course must be offered for academic credit.
    • The course must be organized by you (e.g., selecting the course, obtaining permission from the host institution to enroll, paying tuition, requesting transcripts be sent to RRU upon course completion, etc.).
    • You must achieve a grade of C or higher in order for the course credit to be transferred to your BAIS program (see our academic regulation).
    • You must be in good academic and financial standing.
    • While taking an external course, you must maintain normal enrolment at Royal Roads University (i.e., you are not on a personal or medical leave).

Please note that the grade achieved will not be included in the calculation of the program-based grade point average (GPA). Rather, the course will count as credit towards your BAIS program.

I’m ready to start my INDS417 Independent Study, what now?

About a month or two before you’ve completed your last elective course, we’ll reach out to you and start the process of finding you a supervisor for INDS417. You may already have someone in mind (either from Royal Roads or elsewhere), or you may need assistance in finding one. We’re here to help; we’ve developed a course outline guide. This document is found on your BAIS Program Page in Moodle.

I’m ready to start my Senior Research Project/Paper, what now?

Most often the person who was your INDS417 – Independent Study instructor will be your supervisor for INDS490 – Senior Research Project/Paper.  We’ve developed a research paper handbook to help guide you. This handbook is available on your BAIS Program Page in Moodle.

I'm ready to start my Internship, what now?

If you have selected to complete an internship, you should begin to plan it as early as possible in your program. Start by reviewing the internship handbook and contacting the program staff with any questions you might have.

Please note: there is a work integrated learning fee associated with this course.

What do I put after my name once I graduate?

BA, or BAIS – whichever you prefer.
