The transition to a green and climate-resilient economy and society requires significant investments in up-skilling in the knowledge, skills, and orientations (competencies) necessary for equipping people working across all sectors and livelihoods to integrate and act on climate considerations. The Climate Adaptation Competency Framework (CACF) was developed to support this agenda, and to contribute to a more standardized and comprehensive approach to building such competencies. The CACF consists of 24 competencies across 5 domains.

Distributed learning: This assignment asks you to dive into some of the core competencies associated with climate action, and to do so using a distributed learning approach in your teams. Distributed learning creates an opportunity for the cohort to extend the scope of their learning by having individual teams and team members contribute ideas from multiple resources. In other words, the learning is distributed across the team and the cohort, and then integrated by the cohort.

Each team will select a competency domain, decided collaboratively. Once these domains are chosen each team will decide which competencies they wish to focus on, and decide who is focusing on which competency. Each member of your team will complete a self-directed study following the steps below and using the library databases, and search engines to identify and retrieve and summarize three relevant resources (readings, videos, recorded webinars, other) that can help inform your understanding of the specific competency in focus, and its application in action. Remember that not all searches or resources are equal.

Step 1. As a team select who will focus on which of the competencies in the chosen domain. Each team member should focus on a separate competency, and read the behaviours and mindsets that define that competency.

Step 2. Consider and generate a list of questions that will help you explore this competency. Examples might include:

What is this competence?

What makes this competence important in the context of climate action, and climate action leadership?

What are the behavioural elements of the competence and what is the relevance of these to the competence? (e.g., Why are flexibility and adaptability part of resilience?]

How would I recognize this competency in action? Are there climate action case studies or research studies that would help illustrate this competence in action?

What can I do as a leader to support the development and maintenance of this competency? What actions/strategies contribute to this competency?

**Steps 1 and 2 should be completed as a team. This will ensure you are all working on separate competencies, and that you all have ‘good questions’ to help guide your library search.

Step 3. Review the following RRU Library resources prior to beginning your search:

Tips for Refining Your Search

Library’s Evaluating your sources

Tips Searching Google Scholar

Open Educational Resources

You may also find this youtube video on academic summaries helpful.

Step 4. Once you have reviewed these resources, each team member will search for 3 relevant resources that help you understand the competence. These can be theoretical articles, research articles, or other credible ‘grey literature’ resources (e.g., credible reports, credible blogs). One of these resources should help illustrate the competence in action. Each team member will prepare three brief summaries (approximately 500 words for each summary) based on the resources they identify and select. The summaries should focus on the key points that the resource is making that help inform an understanding of the competency. To focus your summary of the resource, review again the questions outlined in Step 2, as these can guide you in the selection of the resource and your summarizing of it.

These summaries will be shared within your team (jigsaw or distributed learning) initially, and then with the cohort as a whole so that the distributed learning supports everyone’s learning about each of the competencies and the competency domains.

How to Write an Effective Summary

An effective summary condenses a text by synthesizing the information in the text and communicating only the essential facts of the original. Summarizing is different from paraphrasing. An effective summary requires you to read the original text closely so that you can accurately reflect the content and arguments/stance of the original. It is objective and reworks the main ideas presented in the original text.

There are several resources that can help you think about effective summaries:

Tips on Summarizing

Five Keys to Writing Effective Summaries

APA 7th Edition – What are paraphrase and summary

How to Format a Summary

Each summary should provide information that can help deepen your shared thinking about the specific competency.
