{"id":120,"date":"2021-11-14T22:40:50","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T06:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/?page_id=120"},"modified":"2021-11-19T19:51:41","modified_gmt":"2021-11-20T03:51:41","slug":"activity-3-setting-up-a-neighbourhood-for-giggles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-3-setting-up-a-neighbourhood-for-giggles\/","title":{"rendered":"Activity 3: Setting Up a Neighbourhood for Giggles"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Activity 3: Setting Up a Neighbourhood for Giggles<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why we like it:<\/strong> This activity helps children to differentiate between \u2018needs\u2019 and \u2018wants,\u2019 but also invites children to make choices about what is important<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you will need:<\/strong> UNICEF Child Rights Needs, Wants Rights Cards (cut out)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long:<\/strong> 15 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In small groups, ask the student to imagine that you are a government that is<br \/>\nsetting up a new neighbourhood for Giggles on the planet Zog so that kids can<br \/>\ncome visit. Hand out cards. Ask the students to review them.<\/li>\n<li>The cards represent needs and wants that the elected officials have drawn up.<br \/>\nThe government in Zog wants to make sure that the basic needs of kid visitors will<br \/>\nbe met. The officials from the Planet Zog would like you to add anything that is<br \/>\nmissing. Get the group to decide on up to 4 together.<\/li>\n<li>Announce to the group that sadly the government of Zog can only provide 16 of<br \/>\nthe cards. Ask them which cards they are willing to give up and return them to the<br \/>\nfacilitator.<\/li>\n<li>More cuts are needed. As the group to eliminate 8 more.<\/li>\n<li>Invite children to share what they had left &#8211; consider gluing on remaining cards on a piece of paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which ones were eliminated in the first round?<\/li>\n<li>Was the second round more difficult than the first one?<\/li>\n<li>Did you have any disagreements to eliminate, why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>Which items were \u2018needs\u2019 and \u2018wants\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>Do wants and needs differ for different people?
