{"id":135,"date":"2021-11-14T23:00:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T07:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/?page_id=135"},"modified":"2021-11-25T19:47:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T03:47:49","slug":"activity-6-write-a-postcard-to-the-mayor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-6-write-a-postcard-to-the-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Activity 6: Write a Postcard to the Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Activity 6: Write a Postcard to the Mayor<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why we like it:<\/strong> This activity encourages children to express their ideas about what rights are important to them and to share it with an important decision maker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you need:<\/strong> Child rights postcard (ideally printed on firmer paper), pencils and crayons; reference of the United Nations Child Friendly Convention on the Rights of the Child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long:<\/strong> 10-20 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remind students about the 4 Bs &#8211; right to be healthy, safe, heard and to be<br \/>\nourselves. Discuss what each of these things mean.<\/li>\n<li>Invite students to pick 1-2 rights that they think are especially important to them.<\/li>\n<li>Draw them on the postcard<\/li>\n<li>On the back, include name and any important messages for the Mayor of Victoria<\/li>\n<li>Share the postcards with the International Institute for Child Rights and Development. Why?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0As a class, which rights did we think are the most important?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tips &amp; variations:<\/strong> Some students have used this postcard activity to draw about important issues affecting their rights.
