{"id":187,"date":"2021-11-15T22:39:36","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T06:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/?page_id=187"},"modified":"2021-11-19T22:16:44","modified_gmt":"2021-11-20T06:16:44","slug":"activity-3-a-childs-rights-and-wants-adapted-from-national-child-day-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-3-a-childs-rights-and-wants-adapted-from-national-child-day-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Activity 3: A child&#8217;s rights and wants (adapted from National Child Day &#8211; Guide)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Activity 3: A child&#8217;s rights and wants (adapted from National Child Day &#8211; Guide)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why we like it:<\/strong> This is a great tactile way to explore everyday rights and help<br \/>\nstudents understand how they relate to needs and how they are distinct from<br \/>\nwants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you will need:<\/strong> markers, sticky notes, and large pieces of paper, copies of<br \/>\nthe Child Friendly UNCRC Poster<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long:<\/strong> 30 min<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In groups of 3-5 students &#8211; ask students to draw an outline of a child (they can<br \/>\nhave one student to lie down on the paper and have their outline traced). They<br \/>\ncan name this child.<\/li>\n<li>Have students list all the things the child will need to thrive and add them onto<br \/>\nthe outline with sticky notes. Have students look at the ideas and choose the<br \/>\n20 most important ones and remove the rest.<\/li>\n<li>Oh no! Something terrible has happened to the child which means some<br \/>\nthings are no longer possible to have. As a group, ask students to choose five<br \/>\nsticky notes to remove (and 15 to keep).<\/li>\n<li>Terrible! Something else has come up and things have become more difficult.<br \/>\nAsk the student groups to remove 5 more needs (sticky notes), leaving only 10.<\/li>\n<li>In the class, have the groups share what they learned and what 10 things they<br \/>\nleft. Ask what challenges might arise without the other 10 things.<\/li>\n<li>Reflect on how these needs are like the articles in the UNCRC. Time<br \/>\npermitting, ask students to make two columns on the Board &#8211; Rights and<br \/>\nWants. Ask them to add their sticky notes to the most appropriate side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What were the similar items that were left across most groups? What were<br \/>\nsome of the things that were removed? Which were the first things to be<br \/>\nremoved? Did it get more difficult in the second round?
