{"id":210,"date":"2021-11-15T22:52:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T06:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/?page_id=210"},"modified":"2021-11-19T22:22:21","modified_gmt":"2021-11-20T06:22:21","slug":"activity-9-write-a-postcard-to-the-mayor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-9-write-a-postcard-to-the-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Activity 9: Write a Postcard to the Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Activity 9: Write a Postcard to the Mayor<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why we like it:<\/strong> This activity encourages children to express their ideas about<br \/>\nwhat rights are important to them and to share it with an important decision maker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you need:<\/strong> Child rights postcard (ideally printed on firmer paper), pencils and<br \/>\ncrayons; reference of the United Nations Child Friendly Convention on the Rights<br \/>\nof the Child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long:<\/strong> 10-20 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Short group discussion: Why is it important for adults to listen to kids? What<br \/>\nkinds of decisions are important to kids? (e.g. types of activities that they want<br \/>\nto do, don\u2019t feel safe, if they are feeling tired- needing rest).<\/li>\n<li>Remind students about the 4 Bs &#8211; right to be healthy, safe, heard and to be<br \/>\nourselves. Discuss what each of these things mean.<\/li>\n<li>Invite students to pick 1-2 rights that they think are especially important to<br \/>\nthem. Draw them on the postcard.<\/li>\n<li>On the back, include their name (can be their first name only) and any<br \/>\nimportant messages for the Mayor of Victoria.<\/li>\n<li>Share the postcards with the International Institute for Child Rights and<br \/>\nDevelopment. We like to see common themes across classes and schools!<br \/>\nHundreds of these drawings will be sent to the Mayor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Reflective questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What right did you want to share with the Mayor? What was important about<br \/>\nthis right?<\/li>\n<li>As a class, which rights did we think are the most important?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tips &amp; variations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some students have used this postcard activity to draw about important issues<br \/>\naffecting their rights. For example, we have seen drawings on stopping<br \/>\npollution, racism, supporting climate action. and making streets safer for<br \/>\nchildren.<\/li>\n<li>Optional activity &#8211; Rights Quilt. Students can create a \u2018Rights Quilt\u2019 by linking<br \/>\nthe postcards, photo side out\u2019 into a connected quilt on the bulletin board.
