{"id":564,"date":"2022-02-19T15:23:57","date_gmt":"2022-02-19T23:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/?page_id=564"},"modified":"2024-01-17T00:41:39","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T08:41:39","slug":"research-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/research-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Child Thrive Research <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Child Rights Education in Diverse Global Contexts and Times of Crises: A decolonizing, participatory action research project with educators, children, and community members in Canada and Uganda<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research at a Glance:<\/strong> This five-year research project (2022-2027), involving hundreds of children and educators living in Uganda and Canada, focuses on understanding processes for learning about child rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Purpose:<\/em><\/strong> Provide a \u201cgo to place\u201d for sharing high-level\/community accessible information about the research project to inform and engage educators, school administrators, parents\/families to participate in the study across the country sites<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project summary<\/strong>: Given the increasing number and intensity of global crises (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic,\u00a0climate change-related disasters), as well as powerful mass movements demanding social, economic, and\u00a0environmental justice (e.g., Black Lives Matter, Every Child Matters), child rights education is essential to help empower young people to\u00a0actively engage in informed decision-making that will offer the best outcomes for our collective future.<\/p>\n<p>As a <u>team of researchers<\/u>, we are asking: What <em>processes <\/em>support educators in\u00a0different contexts achieve impactful child rights education that empowers children to learn about and\u00a0exercise their rights, particularly during times\/situations of crises?<\/p>\n<p>This study involves children, educators and community members living in four\u00a0diverse sites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a rural Southwestern\u00a0Uganda community<\/li>\n<li>two settlements for refugees in Northern Uganda<\/li>\n<li>a city in Western Canada<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project will reflect and explore child rights education through research-focused conversations, play-based workshops, lesson planning, child-led projects, and co-creating recommendations for policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>Educators from Uganda and Canada will connect through professional development workshops and ongoing sharing of resources and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Children from Uganda and Canada will have the opportunity to communicate with each other through pen pal art, and video story-sharing, and other activities<\/p>\n<p>This research is led by <u>Royal Roads University,<\/u> in collaboration with a network of other <u>research partners<\/u>. It is funded by the <u>Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada. <\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Child Rights Education:<\/strong> Children have the <em>right<\/em> to know about their rights. This is common sense, and it\u2019s also captured in legislation, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, Article 29.d) and the African Charter for the Rights and Welfare of Children (the Charter, 11.2), among others.<\/p>\n<p>Educators play an essential role in teaching children about their rights. They know and understand local contexts, and work with children to develop their knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n<p>Classroom learning activities can help children to explore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what child rights are<\/li>\n<li>why child rights are important to a child\u2019s well-being<\/li>\n<li>how and when to exercise child rights<\/li>\n<li>who is responsible for respecting and upholding child rights<\/li>\n<li>where we can see differences in child rights, based on distinct contexts locally and globally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In learning about the process underpinning child rights education, researchers are also curious to understand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can\u00a0children\u2019s voices and experiences be centered to inform our understanding of effective child rights\u00a0education?<\/li>\n<li>How can parents and community members work with educators and children to promote and uphold children\u2019s rights?<\/li>\n<li>How can child rights education best contribute to identifying and\u00a0advocating for measures to ensure the well-being of all children is prioritized, especially during crises?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Participation:<\/strong> Contact us if you would like to hear more about participating.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Who is involved:<\/strong> This research project involves:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Children ages 5-12+ in various primary\/elementary grades in education across the four sites<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Educators (teachers, educational assistants) and administrators working in participating schools in the sites<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">International team of Canadian and Ugandan researchers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Researchers are striving for approximately\u00a060 educators and 1200 children in total across the sites to be involved in the study spanning the five year project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">In addition to community-wide outcomes, we see several benefits for participants in this project such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"208\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Benefits for children:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"227\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Benefits for educators:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"189\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Benefits for researchers:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"208\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Learn about child rights and how to activate them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMeet\u201d children from another part of the world! Her research and publications are focused in the areas of children\u2019s rights, gender and education, girls and women\u2019s empowerment. Shelley is also on the board of the IICRD. For over 20 years Shelley\u2019s work has focused on global social justice and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalroads.ca\/people\/kathleen-manion\">Kathleen Manion,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(she, her)\u00a0is a Professor at Royal Roads University and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iicrd.org\/profile\/dr-kathleen-manion\">an Associate<\/a> at the International Institute of Child Rights and Development. She has been working in research, social and community services, and academia for nearly thirty years. She loves to work on projects that support children and young people to thrive. Having lived and worked all over the world, she now calls Victoria, BC her home.
