Here are a few suggested activities that might work for your<br \/>\nstudents, based on each learning goal listed above. These activities are designed to<br \/>\nengage young people (ages 5-7) to learn more about child rights, in honour of National<br \/>\nChild Day. The overarching theme is to explore building a sense of belonging\/<br \/>\nconnection. Activities also focus on the right to be heard (Article 4 and Article 12 of the<br \/>\nConvention on the Rights of the Child, which discuss governments\u2019 responsibility to<br \/>\npromote and protect child rights and their right to be heard).<\/p>\n<h2>What are the Learning Goals?<\/h2>\n<p>The learning outcomes of the workshop at the kindergarten and grade 1 levels are for<br \/>\nchildren to:<br \/>\n1. Learn about the 4 Be\u2019s be healthy, be safe, be heard and be myself.<br \/>\n2. Learn the difference between \u2018needs\u2019 and \u2018wants\u2019, how they relate to \u2018rights\u2019 and<br \/>\nwho can help protect your rights (i.e. who has \u2018responsibilities\u2019).<br \/>\n3. Activate children\u2019s expression through their ideas\/drawings about what is<br \/>\nneeded for them to be healthy, be safe, be heard, and be myself.<\/p>\n<p>Learning about child rights meets several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/legacy\/imce_uploads\/UTILITY%20NAV\/TEACHERS\/DOCS\/GC\/CurriculumConnections\/BC\/British%20Columbia%20Kindergarten%20Curriculum%20Connections.pdf\">BC Curriculum Connections for Kindergarten<\/a><br \/>\nand Grade 1 (Source: UNICEF)<\/p>\n<p>We encourage you to choose the ones that will work best in your classroom and with<br \/>\nyour students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>List of activities:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-1-introducing-rights-giggles-and-i-have-the-right-to-be-a-child-video\/\">Activity 1. Fishing for rights<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/childthrive\/activity-6-draw-a-postcard-to-the-mayor\/\">Activity 6. Draw a postcard to the Mayor<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pencils and crayons<\/li>\n<li>A ball of yarn<\/li>\n<li>A small suitcase, box, or tote bag filled with items or images<br \/>\nof the items with tags (including articles to the Convention of the Rights of the<br \/>\nChild \u2013CRC)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFish line\u201d with magnets where kids can \u2018fish\u2019 for a match and a bag for placing the \u2018fish\u2019.
