Kaltura Migration: What you need to know

  • by

What’s happening?

Our video-hosting provider, Kaltura, has started copying Royal Roads University “My Media” content from the UBC-hosted Kaltura instance and putting it on the new Canadian-cloud based Kaltura instance. This will take place between May 12 and 17.

On May 17, between 10 and 11am, Royal Roads Moodle sites will shift from using the UBC-based Kaltura to using the Canadian-cloud based Kaltura.

What do I need to do?

After 11am on May 17, be sure to open KalturaCapture for the first time using the link within My Media in Moodle. This will cause the application to reconfigure to the new Canadian-cloud Kaltura. Once you’ve opened KalturaCapture in My Media, you’ll be fine if you open it on your computer.

If you open KalturaCapture for the first time as an application on your computer, or if you are having difficulty with the program, you should uninstall and then reinstall KalturaCapture.

During this transition period, any videos you uploaded into your My Media between 11 and 17 May will be copied over to the new Kaltura in a few weeks. You can re-upload these videos to the new Kaltura in the interim, or wait for the late batch to be copied over.

The rest of your media (uploaded prior to May 11) should all be in your My Media library.

Most embedded media in Moodle will not play after the switch to the Canadian-cloud based Kaltura on 16 May. Your media hasn’t been deleted, it’s the link in Moodle that needs to be ‘refreshed’. A vendor has been found that will fix embedded media in Moodle automatically, but this solution will take 2-3 weeks to complete. You can re-embed your own media, or you can ask your CTET liaison to help. CTET staff will also be fixing embedded media in live courses.

If you’re a student, let us know if you need assistance.
