In a trend that has only been accelerated by the pandemic, we increasingly use video to support teaching and learning. Video storage for an educational institution like Royal Roads has financial and environmental costs and there are several best practices that help you effectively preserve your videos for future use.
Most video recordings are made for an immediate or short term purpose. If your recording was of a web conferencing session with your students, or a video introduction of yourself for your class, then delete it when it’s no longer needed. This might mean making a habit of deleting videos as part of your end-of-course processes, or setting a ‘delete old videos’ reminder in your calendar three times a year. You should delete old videos on any RRU platform (Collaborate, Zoom, Kaltura or a networked drive) as all of these have costs associated with the amount of space used.
When you create a video that is useful for the longer term, then upload a copy to Kaltura (accessed through My Media in Moodle) and distribute it from there. Kaltura is designed as a video repository, is regularly backed up, and is a relatively low-cost option for Royal Roads. Be sure to delete any copy on Collaborate or Zoom once you have uploaded it to Kaltura.
