One way to do this is through a diversity statement. A diversity statement is a 1-2 paragraph statement added to your course outline that is written in your own words and signals to students your values and approach to creating an inclusive and diverse class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1705959963263_61\">Another way to let students plan ahead for difficult conversations involving sensitive content (e.g. sexual assault, violence, racism, etc&#8230;) is to add content warnings. Why have I chosen it? (Clearly articulate in your course outline, why and how it relates to the course).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider your own bias:<\/strong> Do you have any strong feelings about the content?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-3c67f726\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Grading and participation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Although it is good to have discussions and\/or participation included in grading since this rewards students for the hard work of the difficult discussions, consider having alternative options so that if a student is feeling that a topic is too difficult for them, they will not be penalized for needing to step out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-4956dbc0\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Classroom environment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The physical or virtual setting can impact the type of discussion you will have. Think about whether you will get everyone to sit in a circle, will one person lead, will there be small groups, is it easy for students to leave the room if they need to? Are there any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalroads.ca\/current-students\/counselling-accessibility-wellness\/accessibility\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.royalroads.ca\/current-students\/counselling-accessibility-wellness\/accessibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accessibility considerations<\/a> that need to be designed for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Design an exit strategy<\/strong>: Build in a safe exit strategy that doesn\u2019t academically penalize a student who may need to step away from the discussion. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Considering equity, diversity, and inclusion in creating your syllabus\/course outline:<\/strong> Fuentes, M.
