During the session, you can also lead by example and work with your students on developing their skills in having difficult conversations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are concerned students are getting distressed see <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/difficult-conversations\/managing-distress\/\">Managing Distress<\/a> for further advice. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facilitating a synchronous discussion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep discussions focused and maintain a level of control over them (not completely controlling, but be an active facilitator &#8211; (e.g. ask questions, clarify points, correct misinformation, refer back to readings and previous discussions).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind students of the ground rules and start with a prompt such as &#8220;it takes courage to speak openly, and it also takes courage to listen and understand views that may differ from yours&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manage your emotions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember students have different cultural and language understanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlike an asynchronous discussion, students often don&#8217;t have time to find the right words. This could be the first time students are expressing a certain idea. Take the time to get them to clarify what they mean.
