Born in Guatemala, Walter Alvarez-Bardales left to escape war and poverty at a young age. Despite the many challenges during his journey to Canada, Walter became a successful civil servant working for the Canadian Federal Government.<\/p>\n
Walter completed the Master of Business Administration in Community Economic Development program at Cape Breton University. He excelled academically and was the 2019 MBA entrance scholarship recipient and Valedictorian runner-up. He also proudly represented Canada and CBU at the United Nations Model 2019 in Washington D.C. Walter holds a university certificate in Business Management from Ryerson University and a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Athabasca University. He is the recipient of the Doctoral Entrance Scholarship at RRU.<\/p>\n
Walter trained in political leadership and volunteered in the democratic process and the Canadian Federal election 2021.He recently created a YouTube channel to educate people worldwide about the virtues of democracy and freedom and to express solidarity to those in authoritarian regimes. Additionally, the YouTube channel gave him the means to express himself, express encouragement to people with learning disabilities, like himself, and bring awareness to the issue in a humble effort to erode the ceiling called “the stigma” of mental illness. Walter’s channel has reached a viewership of 150,000 + viewers worldwide.<\/p>\n
Walter views healthcare access as a human rights and ethics issue and wrote a master’s thesis on the subject. His Doctoral topic of interest is “Access to Healthcare to Uninsured People in Ontario.” He wants to disrupt the status quo. He views the denial of healthcare access to people in Ontario, especially in instances of terminal or contagious illness, as an abhorrent practice rooted in Postcolonial inequality. He wants to be an advocate for those who contribute to Canada’s healthy GDP, by working in construction, including hospitals, yet when they fall and break a bone, they are not allowed to use the hospitals that they helped build. Walter sees this as an urgent issue to research so that one-day access policies can be aligned with Canada\u2019s and Canadian’s compassionate spirit.
