Between Languages: Identity Negotiation of the Filipino Diaspora

About the topic

The experiences of Filipinos abroad shows the link of language to navigate identity, power and belonging, and this continuous process creates hybrid identities.

The Paper

My paper explores how the Filipino diaspora uses language as a dynamic tool for identity negotiation and social integration in the host countries. By applying Kim’s (2007) theoretical framework of ideological square, specifically the concept of integrationism, my paper illustrates how hybrid identities are developed to balance their cultural heritage while adapting to the new environment. The core of this process is the distinction between language as interaction, where professionals abroad navigate power structures, and language as identity, which preserves cultural ties and a sense of home. The practice of code-switching then are not merely shortcuts or confusion but a strategic way that allows Filipinos to maintain cultural belonging while being successful in a post-colonial world.

Relevant implications

Katherine Felipe

Hi, I’m Katherine or Kat, I am from Quezon City, in Metro Manila, Philippines and I speak and write both Tagalog and English. My family and I moved here to Victoria in 2022 and I currently work at a non-profit store with a diverse team, which I really enjoy. I’d describe myself as a bit of a talkative introvert, still learning the art of small talk. I really enjoy engaging with both the old-timers and new locals in the community we’ve built at the store. I’m not sporty myself but interested in sports physio and planning on developing my skills in the future. In my free time, my family and I like walking by the beach, doing short hikes, camping and going on road trips. I also enjoy listening to music, true crime podcasts and documentaries, and watching Kdramas or reading romance novels. Someday, I’d love to travel to Japan, South Korea, Spain and Thailand for the food and cultural experiences.
