{"id":1690,"date":"2021-08-25T14:51:10","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T21:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/studentlife\/?p=1690"},"modified":"2021-08-25T14:51:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T21:51:10","slug":"that-email-asking-for-proof-of-vaccination-might-be-a-phishing-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.royalroads.ca\/studentlife\/that-email-asking-for-proof-of-vaccination-might-be-a-phishing-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"That Email Asking for Proof of Vaccination Might Be a Phishing Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here in BC, with the COVID-related announcements of the past couple of days, the stage has been set for Cybercriminals to try and take advantage of us yet again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting back in June, cyber security firm Proofpoint noted a sharp rise in pandemic-related phishing attempts.\u00a0 Interestingly, this spike coincided with a spike in Google searches for \u201cdelta variant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What followed are classic cybercriminal tactics.\u00a0 COVID-19 phishing emails have started to re-emerge, this time focused on the uncertainties related to the delta variant, vaccination requirements, etc.\u00a0 Here\u2019s an example \u2013 note the name of the file being shared:<\/p>\n<p>Pretty scary, eh?\u00a0 And, with employers starting to ask for proof of vaccination, requiring return-to-office forms to be completed, etc. you can see why it\u2019s working. It\u2019s fertile ground for <strong>phishing and ransomware<\/strong> attacks.
