Welcome to Week 3 of Cyber Month.\u00a0 This week we\u2019re going to look at Safe Browsing<\/strong> and how we can connect\u00a0 to and use the Internet in a safe manner.\u00a0 Ready?\u00a0 Here we go\u2026<\/p>\n

First, why \u201cSafe Browsing?\u201d\u00a0 Good question.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one example:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Many of us have been there. Twelve shopping tabs deep on your browser as you’re researching the just-right product to purchase. Then, a window pops up that encourages you to play a game of cards or accept a gift you just won. This is a classic example of a drive-by download<\/a>\u2014cyberattacks that install malware onto your devices without your knowledge. And with over 1.1 billion sites<\/a> currently active on the internet, we want you to be well-versed when it comes to this very relevant cybersecurity threat.<\/em> (courtesy Norton Lifelock)<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s just one tactic the cyber criminals can use to try and take control of our computers, access our information, etc.\u00a0 Let\u2019s start the week with a look at how to stay safe when browsing the \u2018Net:<\/p>\n

Staying Safe on Public Wi-Fi<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Remember: it\u2019s Public<\/strong> –\u00a0 you\u2019re sharing <\/strong>\u00a0the wi-fi with others.<\/li>\n
  • Confirm<\/strong> that you\u2019re using the real connection.\u00a0 E.g. If you saw \u201cStarbucks-Guest\u201d and \u201cStarbucks-Public\u201d\u2026 which would you choose? Best to ask.<\/li>\n
  • Turn off<\/strong> auto-connect or \u201cask to join\u201d features in your computer\u2019s network settings.<\/li>\n
  • Ensure<\/strong> your browser is up to date and that your firewall is enabled.<\/li>\n
  • Avoid<\/strong> accessing bank accounts and other sensitive data when on public wi-fi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

<\/td>\nIs Online Shopping Safe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many people, online shopping is simply \u201cshopping.\u201d Who can resist one-click ordering and next-day delivery? However, it can present opportunities for scammers and cyber criminals.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a few tips:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  • Think before you click<\/strong>.\u00a0 Remember \u2013 if it seems like it\u2019s too good a deal to be true, it probably is.<\/li>\n
  • Confirm<\/strong> offers you see in ads or emails by going to the company\u2019s site.\u00a0 The ad you\u2019re looking at may be fake.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Pay<\/strong> with a credit card.\u00a0 There are more consumer protections for credit card purchases if something goes wrong.<\/li>\n
  • Avoid<\/strong> making online purchases over public wi-fi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Browser Notifications (aka Push Notifications)<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

  • This is the technology that causes messages to pop up on your computer outside of your browser window<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Here\u2019s a legitimate<\/strong> use of notifications:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Scammers<\/strong> use notifications to produce fake<\/strong> notifications like this:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Best Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • KNOW<\/strong> that Microsoft, Apple, Google<\/strong>, and other tech giants DO NOT<\/strong> troll the Internet looking for infected computers.\u00a0 If you EVER<\/strong> get a warning like you see here, chances are 100% it is a scam!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        o\u00a0\u00a0 Click Escape or Alt\/F4 to close your browser and the pop-up.<\/p>\n

        o\u00a0\u00a0 DO NOT<\/strong>, under any circumstances, call the number on the pop-up.<\/p>\n
