Royal Roads is aware of fraudulent emails being sent to post-secondary students across Canada, including incidents resulting in financial loss or identity theft.  These scams may come as a text, email, or website link that appear to be from legitimate sources, such as your bank, the university, or even faculty members, friends and colleagues.

Royal Roads University takes a number of steps to protect our students against these attacks; however, the most effective defence is for you to be cyber aware by being vigilant and taking precautions:

  • Do not click on links or open attachments from unknown or suspicious sources.
  • Be wary of emails or texts that ask for any personal information, such as passwords or credit card details. Legitimate organizations will never ask for this information through email or text.
  • Use anti-virus software and keep your computer and mobile devices up to date with the latest security patches.
  • Use strong and unique passwords for all of your accounts, and change them regularly.
  • Be especially cautious when using public Wi-Fi networks, as they may not be secure.
  • If you receive an email that appears to be from Royal Roads University and you have doubts about its authenticity – for instance, the sending email address does not end with @royalroads.ca – do not reply to the email, rather contact the person directly using contact details from the official Royal Roads University Contact Directory.
