Welcome to CALS 505 – Leading Change in the Context of Climate Change (June 20th – Aug 28, 2022)

This course identifies the considerations of leading change in communities and organizations to support climate action goals as a change leader and change maker. You will be provided with an opportunity to consider how leadership can support increased collaboration in organizations and communities to support initiatives in climate adaptation, climate mitigation and climate resilience.

Transdisciplinary change leadership skills are needed to create the social, political and economic changes and adaptive responses that support a shift into a sustainable future to contribute to climate health. Specifically, leadership skills of resilience, collaboration, engagement and community building are critical. Knowing that as we introduce change initiatives now, the impact will be realized many years into the future.

In this course, the elements of collaborative engagement with rightsholders and stakeholders that will enhance support for climate change initiatives will be explored. Collaborative approaches with federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal, public, private, Indigenous, and community rightsholders and stakeholders will be identified. Reflections on the expanded possibilities for community building, will consider the stakeholder or community voices which might be missing from change initiatives, so strategies to increase inclusion can be integrated.

Alternative perspectives in leadership literature will be explored to raise awareness of alternative worldviews to support further leadership development as inclusive and innovative change makers. The ultimate skill in change mastery is the ability to conceive, construct and convert into behaviour a new view of community and organizational reality that minimizes the pain of short-term change and embraces the possibilities of systemic change.

Special consideration will be given to leadership issues and in particular to the development of the leadership abilities required to effectively reduce resistance to change. Through ongoing reflection and self-assessment, the instrument of change leadership to support passion for climate adaptation and climate mitigation will be explored.

Key topics that will be covered include:

  • Change frameworks to inform initiatives for climate action
  • Strengthening community and stakeholder engagement for collaborative change
  • Change leadership and change-making skill identification and development planning
  • Exploring how human experience of transition influences engagement in change
  • Change planning and development
