Unit 3: Planning for resilience

(2 weeks)

Overview

Translating risk and resilience assessment information into formal plans and strategies is essential in creating desirable outcomes. This unit focuses on the processes by which the outcomes of risk and resilience assessments are translated into strategies and plans for various contexts. Although examples can still sometimes be sparse, lessons will be drawn from more general knowledge of the traditional planning cycle, how this has been applied to climate action generally, and other relevant approaches (e.g., co-production). This will include a critical discussion of policy-making and its application in this context.

Critical analysis of existing resilience plans and strategies will be performed to understand the essential components of a plan, and to get a sense of the state of practice generally. An essential part of resilience plans and strategies is the actual initiatives that are proposed to reduce risk and increase resilience. This unit will involve using scholarly and academic literature to better understand adaptation and resilience initiatives that have been used or proposed, as well as their efficacy.

This unit will also include a requirement to understand how approaches to resilience planning are seeking to become more equitable, as well as various approaches for decolonizing planning generally, and resilience planning in particular.
