Kevin van Egdom
I am the Director of External & Stakeholder Relations at the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. Over my 25-year career with WCLC, I have increasingly focused on organizational social responsibility. I recently led WCLC’s work to achieve an international responsible gambling (RG) certification, and I have served as a judge for RG awards for North American lottery organizations. These experiences have strengthened my interest in the systems, standards, and communicative practices that support effective player protection and public trust.
My research interests centre on the social dimensions of gambling, particularly the communication and organizational tools that can help government-owned lottery operators navigate their dual mandates of revenue generation and social responsibility. I am especially interested in how communication practices enable authentic, credible, and effective approaches to responsible gambling.
I hold a BA in English from the University of Alberta (1998) and an MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University (2020), where I received the Chancellor’s Medal for academic performance. My MA thesis, Re‑Constructing the Past: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Three Alcohol Memoirs, was a nominee for the Governor General’s Gold Medal for outstanding research.
I am a husband and a father of three, and a committed supporter of public libraries and intellectual freedom. I currently serve as Vice-Chair of my local public library board.
