Unit 2: Consideration

Overview

As you start your internship hours and become familiar with your host, be sure to finalize your climate action project outline. That means working with both your host supervisor and your academic supervisor to ensure that your project is relevant, timely, and feasible.

All primary research involving people (e.g., interviews, workshops) requires research ethics approval through RRU’s research ethics committees. A course-based (blanket) ethics application and informed consent (IC) have been approved for this course. You may be able to use these if your project does not involve high risk populations. If not, you will be required to craft a new ethics review application and IC and submit for review by the Academic Supervisor and the RRU Ethics Review Board. Please read Assignment 3 for more details.

As part of this unit you will complete several activities (not marked) and three Assignments (marked) related to the set up of your internship project, the ethics review process, and a mid-term evaluation (see all below).

What will presenting this project look like?

Deliverables Descriptions

Activities & Assessment Overview

  • Set up meetings with your host supervisor to talk about the project, materials and knowledge required for setting it up, talking about the outline and reviewing ethics/informed consent.
  • Review approved blanket Ethics Application and determine whether your research fits the criteria laid out in this application. If it does, you will revise the Informed Consent (IC) to reflect your specific project and submit that (Assignment 3). If your project (research) does not meet the criteria laid out in the blanket application, you will need to craft and submit a new, revised ethics application  using the RRU ethics review form (available on this page as a download) and craft an appropriate IC. Both these documents should be submitted to appropriate assignment dropbox for review and submission by your Academic supervisor. You will need to allow time for this review process which generally takes approximately 1 month or less. As part of this process, you will share drafts of the completed ethics documents with your Internship supervisor for their review and approval as well.
  • Engage with course readings and other relevant academic and non-academic sources.
  • Begin data collection After REB approval in consultation with academic and host supervisor.
