Overview
The objective of this assignment is to better understand how climate risk management is operationalized using real examples from a sector or setting that you find interesting. The types of assessments can include climate impact assessment, risk assessment, and/or vulnerability assessment. You can chose to focus on one example, or to bring in a second example to compare and contrast. In either case, you will describe how the assessment is structured, what its stated goals are, and how effective you think it was in achieving those goals. Your critique should include a consideration of the advantages of the approach as it connects with intended use but also limitations and omissions. Consider who (populations and subpopulations) was included in the assessment and, by inference if necessary, who was omitted from the process.
Instructions:
- Familiarize yourself with the assessment and develop a critique. Some questions that could be useful include: What is the rationale for the assessment? How are key terms like hazard, impact, risk and vulnerability defined? How do the objectives of the assessment connect to the approach? Who is the audience for the work? How effectively does the work communicate methods, results, and conclusions? What can you glean about how the assessment was intended to be used? Was it actually used in that way? You could also evaluate who did and did not participate in the work. Consider whose voice(s) the assessment represents, and whose voices may be excluded, be that intentionally or inadvertently.
- Produce a 1000-word paper based on your individual assessment and submit to appropriate Moodle dropbox.
- You have the option of producing a short 250-word blog post about this assignment that is part of your participation grade for the course. You could also create a topic in the discussion forum.
Requirements:
- A 1000-word paper that summarizes the assessment you examined and shows your analysis as outlined above.
- All external sources must be acknowledged using the currently accepted APA format for in-text citations and references;
- The paper must be submitted on or before the due date.
