Su-Yan Gay
Su-Yan Gay is an instructor in the Post-degree Certificate in Human Resources Management (HRM) full-time program at York University and is also the Faculty Advisor for the HRM practicum and Capstone Research project at Durham College both in Ontario, Canada. In 2021, she was named Outstanding Faculty Member of the year and enjoys teaching as her aim is to share with her students the not so obvious side of HRM in a quest to prepare them for their careers as HRM professionals.
Prior to working in post-secondary institutions, Su-Yan worked for several Canadian organizations in various HRM roles and held some of the following positions: Senior HRM Advisor, Supervisor Employee Education, Human Resources Manager, Senior Manager, Learning & Development, and Chief Human Resources Officer. From 2016 to 2019, she managed her own HRM consulting firm where she worked with both public and private sector organizations in both Canada and the Caribbean, assisting them with their HRM needs. As a consultant, one of her notable projects was developing the curriculum for a training program sponsored by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the government of Barbados called The Flip the Switch Challenge. The purpose of this training initiative was to educate the youth and the underemployed about careers in the renewable energy sector in the eastern Caribbean region.
Su-Yan’s initial research will explore the the impact of unionization on black women in the Canadian workplace. Her research aims to analyze the factors and conditions that have either aided in or hindered the success of black women in workforce. Also, this research aims to provide organizations with a framework to aid with the integration of black women into management / executive roles.
From an academic perspective, Su-Yan holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree (specializing in Adult Education) from Brock University, and a Master of Human Resources Management (MHRM) from York University. She is also a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) and a Certified Training & Development Professional (CTDP).
