Activity 5: Fishing for Rights

Activity 5: Fishing for Rights

Why we like it: This activity is very interactive and helps connect rights with
responsibilities.

What you will need: “Fish line” with magnets where kids can ‘fish’ for a match.
Bag for placing the ‘fish’. We can lend a set for Victoria-based teachers.

How long: 10-15 min

How it works:

  • Hand out a right or responsibility to each child
  • Invite them to stand in a circle around the fishing hole
  • Each child to take a turn and read out their right or responsibility
  • Each child to take a turn to fish for a match
  • Invite the children to match the right and responsibility with their friends so it is a team effort. A reminder to closely listen is important.

Reflection:

  • Invite students to share their observations about what they noticed in the
activity “Did anyone notice that some responsibilities are for kids and some are
for adults?” “What is useful about learning about child rights and
    responsibilities?”

Tips & variations:

  • Depending on numbers, students can take two turns. Help read the cards if
    students are not reading yet.
  • Use a large piece of paper and invite the children to cut out the cards,
match them and glue them on a paper in a chart format. Display them in the
    classroom.
