Activity 6: Just a Kid – Kids Demanding their Rights

Activity 6: Just a Kid – Kids Demanding their Rights

Why we like it: Personal story that helps children to identify child rights. It is also
an inspiring example of children using her rights to make the world a safer and
more just.

What you will need: Ability to watch film and space to discuss.

How long: 10-20 minutes

How it works:

  • Watch: UNICEF’s Just a Kid (*Trigger warning, this video gently introduces the
travesties of violent conflict) (1.40 seconds)
  • n small groups, ask students to discuss the reflection questions.

Reflective questions:

  • What rights stood out for you? Which rights were being called for? [Prompt: to
be heard, safety, to life, to have family, free from violence, education, to a
    health environment].
  • How did these children make change? [Prompts: participation, sharing opinions
    and experiences, having a voice].
  • Can you share an example of someone you know that is helping to make a
difference for other children? What are they doing that is interesting or
    inspiring? How did adults help?
  • Example: Students at Oaklands Elementary did research and gave tickets to
cars parked on a yellow line blocking the crosswalk in front of the school. Their
voices and efforts helped to make walking to school safer. Parents helped the
students to raise awareness and to coordinate with the School and the City of
    Victoria].
