Activity 1: Needs & Rights at Home (Create a Bulletin Board or Wall)
Why we like it: This activity helps students to link needs to rights and to
recognize them in their lives.
What you will need: House of Rights Handout, UNICEF child-friendly Convention
on the Rights of the Child, pencil, crayons/markers
How long: up to 30-40 min
How it works:
- Independently or in pairs/small groups, ask students to draw things that they
like or want in their home (‘in the roof of the house’). - Ask students to draw what they ‘need’ in the main part of the house.
- Look at the UNICEF child-friendly Convention on the Rights of the Child
(UNCRC) - Ask students to write the numbers attached to different child rights and match
them to the drawings (e.g. Apple = Article 27). - Invite students to share their houses with classmates.
- Optional – Ask students to highlight some rights mentioned more than others.
List these on the Bulletin Board and have students add their images under
these rights.

Reflection:
- What did you put in the roof (wants) and in the main part of your house
(needs)? - Which rights did you match to the ‘needs’ in your house?
Tips & variations: Walk through the Convention on the Rights of the Child
together, cut out the icons to glue matching them onto the house. Or invite
students to create their own google slide of the house and paste in photos/clipart.
