When would I use the lesson packages?
There are many points in the year where you could integrate these educational activities into your classroom. You can use them to start your class in a good way or to address any issues throughout the day. If you wanted to link the learning to a specific day, here are some ideas:
- National Child Day (November 20)
- Pink Shirt Day (February 23)
- International Peace Day (September 21)
- International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21)
- Earth Day (April 22)
- Orange Shirt Day / National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30)
- World Rainbow Day (October 2)
- World Refugee Day (June 20)
- National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21)
- Multicultural Holidays and more!
Our recommendation, is that you integrate the learning goals in your daily curriculum. If you want some ideas, reach out!
What are the learning goals?
The learning outcomes of the workshops are for children from K-Grade 5 to:
- Learn the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’, how they relate to ‘rights’ and
who can help protect your rights (i.e. who has ‘responsibilities’). - Activate children’s expression through their ideas/drawings about what is needed for them to be healthy, be safe, be heard, and be myself.
- Introduce children to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and World Children’s Day – especially the right to be healthy, safe, heard and be myself. This might look the same and different for children in Canada and around the world.
- Explore what the words ‘rights’ and ‘responsibility’ mean – and how they are related to child rights. Identify people responsible for child rights.
