A creative approach to identifying the key elements of leadership needed for effective climate action.
Overview
This unit builds on the previous one to begin to unpack all the things a leader must know and do to inform and inspire change. For some, this is intuitive. However, for many, stepping into a leadership role can seem overwhelming.
Taking time to break challenges down not only makes them easier to manage, but also creates opportunities to seek input from and collaborate with others who may have specific subject matter expertise. Working through this process is the first step for students to begin to imagine what they want their own leadership approach to be like.
By making core elements like our values and theory of change specific and tangible, we begin to develop our own criteria to guide decision-making, as well as a clear and unique identity as a leader. Additionally, this work gives students a checklist of key items to consider when developing plans for change, as will be required in Assignment 3.
In addition to reviewing articles and media, students are encouraged to attend the course’s second synchronous session, which will explore the following questions.
- What are the key elements of change leadership needed for climate action?
- What role do these items play in guiding decision-making?
- How can we measure the impact of climate action leadership? How do we know things have changed?
Learning Outcomes
E. Identify the key change leadership elements and models in complex adaptive systems that are required to lead climate action.
B. Develop and implement a climate action theory of change.
